How To Clean Your Kids' Lunch Bag

When the kids get home from school, and it's time to pack their lunch for the next day, you may find their lunch bag needs a clean.

Kids' lunch bags can get messy, whether it's spilt drinks, sticky snacks or dirt from the playground. That's why we make our Kipling lunch bags easy to wash and keep fresh throughout the school year.

In this simple guide, we share the tips you need to wash and wipe clean a lunch bag. You'll soon know how to clean a lunch box the right way so your little ones can enjoy their refreshments with a clean, odour-free lunch bag.

How To Clean Insulated Lunch Bags

Insulated lunch bags are an essential item for kids who take a packed lunch to school. These smart designs keep their food, snacks and drinks cool and fresh all day long. However, to keep these bags looking and smelling fresh, you need to clean them from time to time.

Can you wash insulated cooler bags? The answer is yes. Here is how to sanitise a lunch bag using items you have around the house:

  1. Empty the lunch bag, including any pockets.

  2. Mix warm water and a small amount of dish soap in a bowl or sink.

  3. Dip a cloth or sponge in the soapy water and wipe the inside of the lunch bag. Make sure you clean the corners and edges where food debris and crumbs may get stuck.

  4. Dampen the cloth or sponge with clean water and wipe the inside of the bag to remove any soapy residue.

  5. Pat the bag dry with a towel and leave it out to air dry.

How To Clean Fabric Lunch Boxes

Once you've cleaned the interior of your lunch bag, you can give the outside fabric a much-needed refresh. The process of cleaning the outside fabric of a Kipling lunch bag is the same as that of our other Kipling designs.

Here is how to clean a lunch bag without damaging the fabric:

  1. Clean the outside fabric of the lunch bag with a damp cloth. Do not use bleach, and do not soak the bag in water.

  2. Hang the bag in a shady place to dry.

How to clean a stained lunch box

Sometimes, wiping down your kids' lunch bags isn't enough to remove all the mess and stains that stick around on the surfaces. Try this method to get rid of pesky stains on your child's favourite lunch bag:

  1. Dip a cloth or soft brush in a mixture of water and neutral soap.

  2. Clean the stained area (with care) using a damp cloth or soft brush.

How To Remove Odours from Kids' Lunch Bags

Leftover sandwiches, yoghurt spills, and other mess can leave a lunch bag smelling bad. Even after you've removed any stains or marks, smells can still linger in your kids' lunch bags. So, can you wash a lunch bag and remove traces of bad odours? The good news is you can.

Follow these steps to freshen up the scent of your lunch bag:

  • Dampen a paper towel with white household vinegar.

  • Place the paper towel inside the lunch bag and leave it there overnight.

  • Remove the paper towel in the morning, then follow our "How to Clean Insulated Lunch Bags" instructions at the top of this article.

To prevent bad odours from resurfacing, remind your children to dispose of food scraps as soon as they've finished their lunch. Then, they can pack their lunch box in their school bag and return home with less mess for you to clean up.

Can You Wash Lunch Boxes in the Washing Machine or Dishwasher?

We recommend washing your insulated lunch bag by hand. Avoid using a washing machine, dryer or dishwasher, as these can damage the bag and its insulating properties.
